MakerSpace Digital Badges

Sustainable design badge

The Sustainable Design badge is awarded to NYU Affiliates who complete a series of design and environment-centered workshops that provide them with sustainability techniques to use within the design thinking process. Badge recipients obtain an understanding of and experience in identifying plastics and composting to develop a product while considering its environmental impact.

Design and Innovation Studio (minimum 2):

Participants learn how user research goes beyond usability testing and gain hands-on experience with methods that get to the heart of users' needs. You will learn the do's and don'ts of forming a solid research foundation, cover real-world case studies, and role-play in a mock study to gain hands-on experience.
Participants focus on the fundamentals of ideation and cover the process of generating new ideas to solve problems that have been identified through research. You will learn the best practices of ideation, how to step beyond ordinary solutions, and participate in a series of creative exercises to gain hands-on experience.
Participants learn the fundamentals of rapid prototyping and cover the process of making products with the consumer in mind. You will learn the best practices of prototyping, view physical and digital product development samples, and examine each through prototyping techniques.
This workshop will dig into how storytelling is an essential design tool and can be an advantage in job interviews and presentations.

Sustainable Workshops (minimum 3):

This workshop will go over the basics of solar energy and show you how to build your own solar charging circuit!
Participants learn about the process in which waste in NYC is disposed of and the importance of proper waste disposal. You will also learn how to create your own compost bin that you can make at home and proper maintenance procedures so that you can begin reducing your own waste.
With produce costs rising, participants learn how to effectively reuse food scraps by creating their own garden to minimize waste and expenses.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to care for common house plants and identify common plant problems.
This workshop will focus on the food waste problem and will discuss some simple steps that everyone can take to reduce food waste in their daily routines. Participants will also learn tips and tricks to smart cooking through easy recipes to help them plan ahead, order out less, and understand the impact they can have on the food waste problem.
Participants learn how to tie-dye fabrics with fruits, vegetables, and other natural ingredients.
Participants learn how to identify which plastics are recyclable and create liquid solutions to separate the different types. You will be going over the most common plastics, how to differentiate between them, and appropriate forms of disposal.
Participants learn how to decrease your carbon footprint by making sustainable food wraps using beeswax & soy wax!
