Lemelson-MIT Student Prize

If you or your team have developed a tech-based invention, consider applying for the Lemelson-MIT student prize! Not only will you have the chance to win a cash prize between $10,000 – $15,000, but you will also gain valuable experience that you can add to your resume to impress potential recruiters.

The invention that you submit must be a new technology, product, or process that solves a real-world problem with an identified user. The competition is open to inventions representative of various sectors including healthcare, transportation and mobility, food/water and agriculture, and consumer products. With regards to the judging process, students should keep the potential for commercialization and the design thinking approach in mind when submitting their work. Applicants will be evaluated holistically according to originality and evidence that the invention works as intended to.

To qualify, you must be a full-time degree-seeking student in the 2020 fall semester at any U.S. college or university. You can apply either as an undergraduate team of 2-5 members with one tested invention OR as an individual graduate student with two tested inventions. There is two parts to the online application process: The Initial Application (due September 25, 2020) and the Category Application (due October 16, 2020). Finalists will be notified by December 17, 2020 and winners will be acknowledged in late February 2021. If you are selected as a winner, you will receive your award at EurekaFest with all expenses covered by the Lemelson-MIT program.
