Where can I find out more about events at MakerSpace?
Is MakerSpace open to people outside of NYU?
The equipment may only be used by current NYU students, faculty, and staff. Some events that we conduct in the space are be open to the public.
I would like to learn the more advanced machines such as the Objet30 in the facility but I don’t see any video guides or a training calendar for it, will I still be able to learn that machine?
Some of the machines in the MakerSpace require special training. If there is a machine in the MakerSpace that you wish to use but cannot find training videos on our NYU Stream, please email email@example.com with your intended use of the machine and to schedule a training for the machine.
If no one is at the front desk, who can I also ask for help?
The MakerSpace has three different TA stations: the front desk, a table by the Ultimaker 3D printers, and the tools station. If you are coming into the space, you must wait for a TA at the front desk to check you in to maintain a safe user density. After that, you may ask any of the TAs in the MakerSpace for help.
If I watch a training video on Monday, can I come in later that day to finish the training?
No. To maintain a safe user density, we will need to ensure that all users coming to the in-person check in are watching the required videos to enter the space. We need time to check the NYU Stream analytics, so we require 48 hours before booking an in-person check in.
How much does it cost to use the MakerSpace?
I cannot make any of the in-person check in times. How can I finish my training?
If you cannot make any of the times available to reserve an in-person check in feel free to reach out to us, but please check the training calendars often as times will change throughout the semester.
How are you ensuring our safety in the MakerSpace?
Since the MakerSpace is a research and prototyping lab, everyone coming into the space will be required to wear medical masks over their nose and mouth (medical masks will be provided if needed). No cloth masks, bandanas, or masks with respirators will be allowed. Everything, including desktop computers, tables, machines, and trainings, is reservation only to maintain a safe density of users at all times. All items and surfaces will be disinfected before and after use, and we ask that users also disinfect items and surfaces before and after use. The MakerSpace will maintain social distancing guidelines (6 feet, or 2 meters). Each individual entering the space must also comply with NYU’s daily screener to access the building.
What is the MakerGarage?
I printed something on the Advanced 3D and Ultimaker printers, how will I be able to pick up my parts?
All MakerSpace prints will be available for pick up in plastic bags by the front door for contactless pickup. You will be notified by email when your print is ready to be picked up.
Are the hours for the MakerSpace affected due to COVID-19? If so, what are the hours for the MakerSpace?
The MakerSpace hours are subject to change, but for the Fall 2020 semester they are:
Monday – Friday: 10AM to 10PM
Saturday & Sunday: 12PM to 6PM
I’m working on a group project, where in the space can I work?
I want to work and study in the space, how can I do that?
I’m going to be remote for Fall 2020, how can I get involved with the MakerSpace?
I previously took a safety orientation (or any other training) before Fall 2020, do I have to take another one with the new format?
All users are required to watch the MakerSpace COVID-19 Policies Video. If you have already attended training in the past you are not required to retake it. We have your information saved in our system. For any additional trainings, you must complete them using our new format. You can find more information on the new training procedures here.
Can I learn software in the MakerSpace?
What training do you offer?
The MakerSpace offers trainings for the machines in the space. This semester, we are implementing new training procedures that include an online portion and an in-person check in. You can find more information about how to complete them here.
What kind of projects can we work on?
We see students work on both personal and class projects in the MakerSpace. How do I get started?
The MakerSpace is open to all NYU students, staff, and faculty. For the Fall 2020 semester, all users coming into the space must first watch the MakerSpace COVID-19 Policies Video. Once completed, you can reserve a workspace, such as a table or a desktop computer. If you are looking to use a machine, you must first have completed the safety orientation, and then the training for the machine that you wish to use. You can find all of our trainings and reservations here. If you are remote for Fall 2020, you may virtually join our workshops. Keep a lookout for them here.
I have never been to the MakerSpace before, what is it?
The MakerSpace is located at 6 Metrotech Center, RM 118, Brooklyn NY inside New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering. It is a prototyping lab with equipment and tools available for all NYU students, staff, and faculty only. You can find more information about the machines we have in the space here. Our programming arm, the DeisgnLab, also offers workshops to learn new skills and hosts events with industry leaders and guest speakers.
